What an honour it is to be elected President of Hope Show 2018.  Hope Show is what I call a proper, traditional agricultural show. Sheepdog trials, livestock, machinery, horticulture, stalls and the main ring - the show has plenty to entertain everyone.  It therefore gives me the greatest pleasure to welcome you to the Show and to wish you a grand day out.

On behalf of the Show I would like to thank the many volunteers whose hard work over the year has resulted in an increasingly successful show. It is a privilege to be part of the team that puts on a such a great show and also supports the local community and local businesses.

I have been attending Hope Show all of my life, from being pushed around in a pram by my parents, working my way through Hope Valley Young Farmers which I joined aged 10,  to becoming a committee member for the Sheep Dog Trial section from the age of 15 and I'm still there 43 years later! Along the way I've shown calves, sheep, lambs and even run dogs in the trials, and more recently I have also been a trials judge.

Hope Show originally began as a sheepdog trials and has grown over the years into the wonderful show you visit today. The sheep dog trial course is renowned, attracting  top names and dogs from around Great Britain.  I never tire of seeing young dogs run in the novice classes and watching them develop into experienced dogs along with their handlers - some going on to compete at national and international levels.  It takes many hours of hard work and dedication to reach this level.  I hope you find time to see some of the dogs in action because it is thrill to watch the dogs control the sheep by working with their shepherds and listening to whistled commands.  On Tuesday we will hold the local and beginners classes where future champions have a chance to compete around our course.  This is free to attend if you would like to come along.

Finally, and not least, I would like to thank my wife Jill, and my family for all their help and support over the year and especially for the big day helping me represent Hope Show.
