Matthew Clark aged 13, of Hangram Lane Farm is hoping that his calf ‘Domino’ will win the “Rear a calf” competition at this year’s Hope Show on 26th August, Bank Holiday Monday.  Matthew has won competitions at Hope Show on three previous occasions; he’s hoping that fourth time is still lucky!
Matthew takes a pride in being self sufficient…

A keen member of Hope Valley Young Farmers, Matthew saved up enough money from his thriving egg business selling 2 or 3 dozen eggs a day, in order to be able to bid for and buy his own calf.  His dad, Andrew Clark, acknowledges that his son has a good stock buyer’s eye and admits that “‘Dominowas a good choice!”  A black and white Belgian Blue cross Fresian heifer calf, ‘Domino’ was born in January this year and is being carefully prepared by Matthew for her Hope Show appearance.

Good basis for a healthy future in farming…

The Hope Show “Rear a calf” competition also involves young handlers in managing and monitoring the cost of rearing their calves.  Matthew regularly weighs ‘Domino’, monitors the weight gain and calculates the daily cost of feeding and rearing his young calf.

Running his own small egg business, saving the profits to bid for a calf and learning about the daily costs and tasks involved in rearing a potential Show champion would all seem to provide essential skills needed for Matthew to become a successful farmer in the future.

Winning a First prize at Hope Show on Bank Holiday Monday, would just be the icing on the cake!

Matthew’s Dad is hoping for a winner too…
Matthew’s dad, Andrew, who fought successfully for a sponsored limousin class at Hope Show, is entering a calf called “His Grace” in the “Young Bull” class on August Bank Holiday.  The limousin calf is the 4th generation bred at Hangram Farm and with a mother called “Duchess” – this year just may be the ideal time for a win!
