The McColgan Way
Prior to the year 2000 Hope Show was always held in the field opposite Marsh Farm. It was in 1992 that the Show was able to consider the purchase of a permanent site on the ground at Marsh Farm.
The land was owned by Blue Circle Industries and tenanted and farmed by the Sidebottom family who were great supporters of the Show.
Much discussion took place about restrictive covenants, mineral rights and the succession of tenancy protecting the Sidebottom family.
In 1993 the sale was agreed by Blue Circle and a development fund was created to help buy what would become a permanent showground for the future. In was not until 1995 that the purchase was complete.
Throughout the negotiations there was one man, Mr J W McColgan, who was Show President in 1991-1992 and was also the Managing Director of Blue Circle who had liased with both the company and the Show to conclude a settlement.
Mr McColgan became the first Chairman of Marsh Farm Development Company and the Show society will be forever grateful for the vision he had and the support he gave.
On his death 20 years ago in 1998 the decision was taken to plant an avenue of trees at the entrance of the showground and it would be known as The McColgan Way in this memory.
This year to add to that, as you will have walked into the Showground you would have seen a new sign clearly marking The McColgan Way for visitors throughout the year to enjoy. This has been something that Hope Morris, Past President, has worked very hard to achieve and we thank her for all her efforts.
